Friends of Russell County Animals (FRCA) cherishes the human-animal bond and recognizes that love for pets crosses all socioeconomic and ethnic boundaries. We believe that all people and pets, regardless of life circumstances, should have the opportunity to benefit from that relationship.
FRCA understands that people in poverty face significant barriers to obtaining services for their pets that they truly want and need. Our organization assists pet owners in obtaining care for their pets.
Through donor and grant support, our outreach programs reduce overpopulation and local shelter intake by offering assistance in spay/neuter, wellness services, and alternatives to giving up a beloved pet.
We provide financial assistance for veterinary care for owned pets and educate our community on the importance of population control.
Pet food through Elk Garden School Community Ministries, pet deposits for rental properties, and urgent veterinary care can be significant barriers for people wanting to keep their pets. We help owners gain access to resources and reduce the heartbreaking decision of having to surrender their pet.
Help is given to disadvantaged pet owners for free/low cost vaccinations and preventative veterinary care.

For those in the community who are able to drive, volunteers are needed to take pets to their spay/neuter surgery or to veterinarian care.
Many volunteers are needed to assist with event fundraisers throughout the year. We love animals and having fun!

Looking for another way to help?
FRCA welcomes your support to ensure we can, together, help more people and pets in need.
Leaving a legacy gift to FRCA ensures that our organization can continue to help for years to come. Gifts in memory of a loved one are a way to honor their life and love for animals.
Other ways to support our mission are:
For the past three years, FRCA solicited over 150 partner rescue organizations who committed to transferring and ultimately adopting out unwanted and homeless and community and shelter animals.
In 2017, FRCA partnered with Elk Garden School Community Ministries to serve a minimum of 60 families in need per month (an average of 168 dogs and 177 cats fed within those households). Each family was offered free spay and neuter services.
In 2017, FRCA was awarded grant monies which specifically funded spay/neuter services to both shelter and owned county animals.
In 2018, 30 feral or community cats were sterilized with grant funding awarded to FRCA.
FRCA is not a shelter and doesn't have a physical location to house dogs and cats. At times, we may have foster parents available to temporary house your pet, but volunteers and space is limited.

We are excited to announce our new name and mission...Friends of Russell County Animals (FRCA)! We have made an enormous impact on addressing the needs of the animal shelter and our community, transforming a quite dismal past. As we reach the close of our 3rd year in operation, the Friends’ Board of Directors, have felt a pull to focus more on the needs of the people and animals within the community. We believe that this transition is one that will make an even greater impact and ultimately reduce the number of homeless and unwanted animals within our region. We are excited to celebrate the many accomplishments this year due to the support of donors and rescue partners. We ask for your continued support as we move forward in this journey.
The Friends family would like to again thank you and wish you and your family a blessed and joyous New Year.
